Virginia Tech is a good engineering school, and they do a lot of aerospace education and get many NASA related grants.
I fear these symbols on the helmets represent the culmination of their aerospace discipline.
Those are alien anal probes. Seems they have two assholes.

Word around Blacksburg is that Beamer doesn't have his guys look up during a rainshower on the chance they might drown themselves.
