Spring practices, scrimmages and games are all taking place this month and college coaches are making the most of it. Top prospects, committed or not, have been visited by just about every D-1 college imaginable.
--2014 Miami OL commit Trevor Darling is obviously going to be a top recruit in the state. He is already hearing from elite programs and recently picked up an offer from national championship contender LSU. He told CaneInsider.com that a lot of schools are coming after him, but he is “locked into Miami.” Right now, he is in the capable hands of Micheal Barrow, Miami’s linebacker coach. It’s going to be a long road ahead for Miami with Darling because of all the attention that he will receive from other colleges, especially playing for south Florida powerhouse Miami Central. Of course Miami is ahead of the game right now, but it will be imperative for them not take his commitment as a lock and stay on him as his recruitment is far from over.
On his commitment level at the moment: “You might as well say 85-90 percent,” Darling said. “I really have my mind set on Miami.”

--Tampa (Fla.) Plant wide receiver Austin Roberts (6’2/185), son of former Cane and Indianapolis Colts coach Alfredo Roberts, was offered by UM. They are one of his five offers which include Indiana, Iowa, Purdue and Florida. He said that his dad having played for Miami will “factor into my decision,” but it will not be the deciding factor. Like always, coach Art Kehoe made an impression on the young man.
“Coach Kehoe is a very energetic person,” Roberts said about the coach that offered him. “He is not like most people I have met in my life time. He is one of a kind, in a good way.” The 2014 prospect grew up a Canes fan, his dad played there and he has an offer. Right now, UM is in good shape with him.

--Jordan Sherit, DE from Tampa (Fla.) Hillsborough is still high on UM. Yes, he has visited Florida at least twice, once with his parents and another time alone. However, when asked if Miami has slid down his list in light of his recent offers and visits, Sherit responded, “Not at all.” Recruiting Coordinator Brennan Carroll is now responsible for recruiting the 2013 prospect, a job that was Coach Franklins. Sherit said this about Coach Carroll, “He is a fun guy.” The talented DE plans to visit Miami the week after his spring game.

--CaneInsider.com caught up with highly touted quarterback Chase Litton (6’6/195) from Tampa (Fla.) Wharton. Litton, who holds an offer from LSU, has been on Miami’s radar for some time. The 2014 pro-style prospect grew up a “die-hard ‘Canes fan” and is being recruited by UM offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch. He put LSU as his top school right now, mainly because they are his only offer. Coach Fisch has made it clear to Litton that he is one of, if not the top quarterback target for 2014.
On Coach Fisch: “He is awesome. He is definitely a coach that kids can interact and joke around with.”

--JUCO fullback and long snapper prospect Larry Correa was offered a preferred walk-on spot by Miami coaches. He is considering it, but finances could be an issue. He played with Dyron Dye and Ray-Ray Armstrong at Sanford (Fla.) Seminole, and would like to return to Florida. Credit to Coach Golden, and the rest of the coaching staff, for being creative and trying to work around the low scholarship numbers. Correa, 6’0 and 252-pounds, should know at the end of this semester where he will end up.

--Miami (Fla.) Southridge linebacker Frank Newman has been getting a lot of attention lately. He has been out to Miami’s spring practices and has talked with the coaching staff. He does NOT hold an offer, according to Newman. He was told to expect an offer by the coaches. The 5’11, 200-pound 2014 prospect plays on the same team as 2013 UM safety target Jamal Carter.

--Standout wide receiver Dominic “Showtime” Walker from Orlando (Fla.) Evans was visited by Miami wide receiver coach George McDonald. UM is one of the colleges he grew up a fan of, but is cautious because of the ongoing NCAA investigation. He holds an offer, but it will be hard to pull him in until there is some kind of good news from the ruling. The 6’2, 195-pound athlete has two friends and teammates committed to Florida State, LB Ro’Derrick Hoskins and WR Tony Stevens, which could weigh in on his decision as well.

--Ft. Lauderdale (Fla.) University School OL product Jordan Budwig (6’4/320) is expecting a visit from offensive line coach Art Kehoe. He grew up a Miami fan and feels that they are close to offering. He named Wisconsin, Miami and Florida State as his top three.
On Art Kehoe: “I love his personality. He is so similar to the offensive line coach we have here. He is a laid back guy, but is serious on the field. You can talk to him if you need to.”
On UM: “I have been a 'Canes fan my whole life,” Budwig said. “I used to go to the Orange Bowl with my dad when I was little and watch all of those old games. I like how it’s a really good academic school. That’s what I am looking for, education. I realize football can’t last forever. I would be blessed to make it to the NFL, but everyone can’t. So, having a good academic background is important, which UM brings obviously.”
