The summer is coming to an end and recruits are trying to get last minute visits in before school starts. Morgan Mahalak, who plays quarterback for Kentfield (Cali.) Marin Catholic High, visited the Miami Hurricanes this past weekend and talked about it with CaneInsider.com.
“The first day we got there we went to practice and met with coach Hurlie Brown and just watched practice,” Mahalak said. “Then after that I introduced myself to Coach (Jedd) Fisch, the whole coaching staff and Coach (Al) Golden. There is a coach, Coach (Brennan) Carroll the tight ends coach, that came up to me and asked me what county I lived in. His dad, Pete Carroll, went to Redwood High School which is my rival school. So, that was pretty cool.
"The next day we went and watched practice and then got a tour of the school. We sat down in a meeting with Coach Fisch and Coach Golden for about an hour and that was about it.”
After spending time with Miami head coach Al Golden and offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch, Mahalak came away impressed.
“I love both coaches,” Mahalak said. “They are both super sociable and super easy to talk to. Coach Fisch is really funny and I could definitely see myself playing for him. Coach Golden is a really nice guy. I really think they have the right coaches in there to turn their program around and return it to where it was.”
The Canes are limited to the number of quarterbacks they will be taking next year and the competition will be steep. However, after speaking with Coach Fisch, Mahalak is one of the frontrunners.
“Coach Fisch said they will offer one quarterback and they are going to recruit me. I can definitely see myself fitting in their offense. Obviously Coach Fisch has a great track record and has produced tons of NFL quarterbacks and worked with tons of them. That’s something special that when you go there you know you will be getting a great coach, a great teacher and mentor.”
The 6’3, 190-pound rising junior visited several schools this summer including “Oregon, Oregon State, Nevada for a team camp, Notre Dame, Miami and Colorado.” Out of those colleges, he named three that really caught his eye.
“I think the top three are Miami, Colorado and Oregon State,” Mahalak said. “I think Miami stood out the most and they are probably my number one now.”
He continued to talk more about his new top college.
“I thought it was great,” Mahalak said about UM. “It is totally different from anything I have seen yet. It’s obviously the South and it’s Miami. It’s tropical and there are gators in the water so it’s a totally different vibe. I loved it.”
In Coral Gables, Florida, he met Miami quarterbacks Stephen Morris and Preston Dewey.
“I talked to Stephen Morris a little bit and Preston Dewey a little bit as well. They are both good guys.”
