DT Jordan Watkins (6’5, 265) of Woodward Academy in College Park, GA has some options on where to attend school. The highly sought after tackle says, “I think I’m up to 35 offers total. Miami, Florida, Florida St., Stanford, Ohio St., Oklahoma, Virginia Tech, LSU, and Tennessee are among my offers.”
The standout tackle talked about his contact with the Miami coaching staff. “Coach Paul Williams was the first coach I talked to and he offered me. Lately, I’ve been talking with Terry Richardson,” Watkins said. “I really like Miami because going back, my cousin, WR Andre Johnson, was on the 2001 national championship team and because of him I’ve always followed the ‘Canes. I’m visiting next weekend.”
Where does Miami fall into his favorites? “So far from what I’ve heard, I like everything about Miami. I really like what coach Al Golden is doing so far. It’s a great place for athletics and academics. It’s the overall package.”
Watkins has a desire to compete for a national championship in college. A program that can offer that chance might win him over. “I want to play for a school that I feel has a chance in my four years to play for a national championship. In Miami, you have a great location and coaching staff in place surrounded by quality football players in south Florida,” Watkins said. “I think the Hurricanes can get to that level under Golden. Being Andre’s cousin, I know Miami has support all over the country, and that speaks to the prestige of a University of Miami degree.”
Location won’t be a point of emphasis in his decision. “Location will not be a factor for me. I want to be in a large networking area because I’m majoring in broadcast journalism. I want to be apart of a large area that can help me get into my field after football is over.”
The Woodward Academy star discussed his academic future. “Academics for me are huge. NFL money will be good, but what happens after your football career is over? My mom is a successful lawyer and my dad graduated from MIT, so naturally academics have been stressed in my family and I see and understand the importance of them as well.”
Early playing time isn’t a concern for Watkins. “The depth chart won’t be considered in my choice. I feel that I’ll have the summer and fall next year to show the coaches what I’ve got and earn a spot,” Watkins said. “If there are three or four guys ahead of me that are better, then that shows me I have some things to work on. If I’m not ready to help a team now, then I don’t deserve to play.”
Watkins said he has grown into a better football player and he attributes that to an outstanding work ethic. “I feel I have a high motor. I think it’s something that I’ve developed over the last couple of seasons. Early on, if there was a toss play to the opposite side, I would give up on it and not finish,” he reports. “Coming into my junior season, I got better, and now I’m hustling to the ball no matter what and trying to make the play. So my work ethic improved and it helped make other players around me improve because of that leadership by example.”
