The last practice before tomorrow's final scrimmage of camp got underway this morning on the fields at Greentree. The team practiced in shoulder pads and shorts and looked to have more players back from injury than in previous days. Most notably, defensive end Anthony Chickillo returned to wearing a green (defense) practice jersey having exchanged his limited contact yellow jersey from two days prior because of a sinus infection that kept him out of much of the practice activity.
Second year Miami head coach Al Golden, praised his team this morning heading onto the field for practice and said they responded well to the grind of yesterday's two practice sessions. Heading into the scrimmage, coach Golden wants to see some more players competing to solidify positions and win jobs.
"We need some guys to step up. The Eddie Johnsons, the Gianni Pauls and Thurston Armbristers."
Armbrister who has been one of the surprises of camp appears to be back from an eye injury and still getting it done to the satisfaction of his head coach. After a practice rep on Thursday, Golden pulled him to the side and gave him praise for his toughness.
Golden is as focused as he could be right now heading into tomorrow's scrimmage.
"I haven't watched TV in three weeks. I heard there was an Olympics, but I don't know any of the results. I don't know the medal count or anything. I saw Amy [Deem], (head track & field coach) last night, so I know she did great, but other than that I don't know."
Saturday's scrimmage will mirror a real game and will help the team with substitution patterns and managing special teams. The team will put it all together and the coaches will evaluate the performances after. On Monday, we'll likely learn, what the depth chart will be for Boston College.
But right now, Golden says Miami has to be this team's focus.
"We can't beat B.C. worrying about what their doing we've got to beat B.C. by carrying out our plan."
