Al Golden Speaks to the Media | Georgia Tech Week

Miami Hurricane head coach Al Golden spoke to the media today during his normal weekly press conference just after noon eastern and the news of the day is that freshman Walter Tucker will burn his redshirt and be active this weekend against the Yellow Jackets.

Tucker, a fullback out of American Heritage Plantation, had been on defense at linebacker and was moved over to offense late in camp.  The coaches were apparently raving about his play but didn’t want to burn his red shirt to allow him to continue to develop behind established running back depth.

Now, things have changed.

A hamstring injury to Eduardo Clements has caused the team to look to Tucker, who has been playing stand out ball in practice on both offense and special teams, to fill the void left by the senior leader at running back.  Here are a few other news and notes as well as the daily practice report from Brian ‘the beast’ London:

Al Golden on Corn Elder switching to RB to provide depth instead of burning Tucker’s shirt. Was it ever considered?: We tried it in training camp when someone was hurt (moving Elder from defense to offense) but what we opted for is activating Walter Tucker at FB. He’ll take some of the roles from Eduardo (on special teams) and Walter will no longer be a redshirt.

Corn Elder is playing DB and special teams.

Duke Johnson had a “careless” mistake going against what we teach vs USF (fumbles).  Golden’s response was blunt, “we don’t teach reach-the-ball out unless it’s a fourth down, the last play of half or last play of the game.”

Tracy Howard and his improvement this year, what’s the cause?: “He’s more coachable, and I don’t mean that in a negative sense. I mean when you’re young, you need to hear about it a bunch of times.” When he loses a little bit of focus, it shows up in his game. I work with the corners a lot. When Tracy’s on task, he gets consistently better.

Golden’s comments on Georgia Tech’s offense: “This is our sternest test to date. This is a great challenge for us. I don’t have to remind our defense we gave up on 250 yards to this team. We gave up two big pass plays, 4 of 5 in the redzone. It’s not just the ACC opener, it’s a tremendous challenge for our defense.”

Shane McDermott-is a full go

Jermaine Grace- full go

Eduardo Clements-will be a game time decision (Thursday)

Health of Stephen Morris: He’ll be okay. He’s been good. We didn’t go backwards. The practices get shorter and shorter as the week goes on so I don’t’ think there will be anything hindering his return. He didn’t go backwards Saturday. Hopefully he’ll be 95% on Saturday.

Morris has a deep bruise on his ankle and his coach says “it just takes a lot of time to heal.”  “He’s made significant progress, especially since Saturday’s game.”
